BROOKE COUNTY GENEALOGY ORGANIZATION
The Brooke County Genealogy organization has been a link to the past since it was formed in 1994 in a class at the Beech Bottom Community Christian Church.
Gwen Hubbard, the group's first president and Mary Lou Henderson of the Wheeling Area Genealogy Society conducted a class on family history. Following several sessions; interest was sparked and there are now over 100 members locally and regionally.
During 1996-97 we met at the Wellsburg library and made plans to move forward. In 1998 the group was incorporated. We now have a secured area in the library for research.
Gwen Hubbard and Bobbi Elliott have transcribed many early records and now have them for sale. A percentage of these sales are for the benefit of the organization to purchase new research books.
Volunteers are in the library on Wednesday and Saturday from 2-4 p.m. to help you with research. If you cannot be there on these days, the librarian will try to contact someone to meet with you.. Appointments can be made via our e-mail.
We are pleased at the number of persons who have come into the library to do research. It is indeed a pleasure to bring a smile to a face of one who is doing research!
Doing genealogy is like doing a jig-saw puzzle........first you have to find the pieces and then hope that pieces fit into the puzzle.
Do come visit us at the Wellsburg Library 10th and Main

THE STORY OF OUR BOAT
Let me tell you a story.
Here in Brooke County, Charlestown now known as Wellsburg had a number of boat yards.
Away back in 1806 and along down until 1850 those yards were in existence.
Quite a number of flat and keel boats were required to float away the produce gathered at this point.
In the early history of Wellsburg, a number of SCHOONERS were built near the mouth of Buffalo creek and ladened with flour and sailed direct to LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND.
We are unable to get the date of the enterprise. It is said that when these vessels were in mid-ocean, they were overhauled, and as their clearance papers were from this place, the mariners were sorely puzzled to find any such port.
A map was resorted to and the place pointed out, after which the vessels were allowed to proceed on their journey. They arrived safe in Liverpool.
