This church was composed originally of thirty-four members dismissed for this purpose from the church on Brush Run, Washington county, Pa., then a member of the Redstone Baptist Association, some from the regular Baptist Church on Cross Creek, Brooke county Va., and a few others. All these having been baptized by immersion into Christ, assuming the New Testament as their only rule of faith and practice, united together in one Lord, one faith, one baptism and discarding all creeds and confessions of faith except the above were accustomed to meet for worship and Godly edification in the "Brick Meeting House" in the upper part of the town of Wellsburg, then known by the name of Charlestown.
This meeting house was built by the aid of collections made by Alexander Campbell while on a trip to the East for this purpose at the close of the year 1814 and beginning of 1815. The congregation then formed has kept up an organization ever since its formation, and it enjoys the distinction of being the oldest congregation of Disciples in existence. It has ever since its organization been a wonderful power for good in the community, and has enjoyed the good fortune of having as regular pastor or otherwise most of the pioneers in the movement that resulted in the foundation of the religious body known as "Disciples of Christ," among these persons being Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Walter Scott and Barton W. Stone.
In 1848 the present house of worship was built, and it has been kept in good repair and is one of the largest and most comfortable church edifices in the city.
During the last year the church has built a very nice parsonage, and has shown a commendable zeal in paying for it in one year. The membership of the church at the present time numbers 400 members.
The official boards of the church are as follows:
Elders-W. J. Handyman, Treasurer; Thomas Waddle.
Deacons-John A. Kelly, Louis G. Roberts, Ross Marsh, J. S. Poole, Edward Harvey, D. K. Frazier, W. D. Williams.
Trustees-J. C. Kemp, G. W. Frazier, J. A Kelly, W. F. Hinkson.
Clerk-Miss Annie J. Beare.
