THE CROSS CREEK TENT CEMETERY

The Cross Creek Tent Cemetery is located on Tent Church Road, just a short distance off Eldersville Road and adjacent to the Cross Creek Tent United Presbyterian Church
There were burials in this cemetery before 1798, the year the church was formally organized.
At the annual congregational meeting of the Tent Church on April 7, 1918, a board to oversee the cemetery was appointed and members were: J.C. Hays, Frank Hindman and Russell Strain. Evan Hindman, Jr. and Sut Ryland were appointed as collectors for a fund to pay for the work to be done at the cemetery . Later that year the board retained Mr. Frank Chapman, a Wellsburg Attorney, to make application to the State of West Virginia for a charter. The charter, signed by Stuart F. Reed, Secretary of the State, was granted on December 20, 1911. Those signing the agreement were James Archer, Charles Freshwater, Frank Hindman, J.G. Hays and Russell Strain.
On February 6, 1914, trustees of the church met at the Tent schoolhouse, next to the church, and signed the deed conveying to the Cemetery Association the cemetery and a part of the hitching ground to be used for new lots. On July 15, 1916, the Brooke County Court assigned the supervision and control of the Strain Burying Ground to the Tent Association. This family cemetery is on an acre of ground on St Johns Road.
A few of the names from pioneer families of the community on the stones at this cemetery are: Wright, Hays, Hunter, Williamson, Hindman, Strain, Freshwater, Miller, Snyder, Ryland, Campbell, Cassidy, Hall, Sanders and Stout.
Up to the present time an active board of trustees supervised the needs and finances of the cemetery. The trustees (1978) are: Wilbur Freshwater, George Williamson, Grace Nicholes, Dan Nicholes, Elsie Welshans, Edna Freshwater, Marie Johnson, Ruth Brenneman and Earl Grigsby.
